C&T Publishing Saves by Going Green
CONCORD, CA, May 29, 2008 — C&T Publishing announced that it is stepping up its efforts to reduce the impact of company operations on the environment. Changes already made to green company operations have not only reduced the company's carbon footprint, but also boosted the company's bottom line.
"As a book publisher, with paper a core part of our business, we are concerned about the future of the world's remaining endangered forests and the environmental impacts of paper production," says Todd Hensley, Chief Executive Officer. "We want to do everything in our power to reduce carbon emissions and help fight global warming.”
"We have also found that it's just smart business to go green. In addition to reducing our carbon footprint, we are saving thousands of dollars each year by adopting some very simple policies that any business can implement, large or small."
Small Changes Led to Big Results
In early 2007, the company formed a volunteer "Green Team" with the dual goal of reducing the company's carbon footprint and reducing overhead wherever possible. The company was recognized as a California Green Business by the Bay Area Green Business Program (http://www.greenbiz.ca.gov) in November 2007.
The greening of company operations has already produced some meaningful savings:
1. The company will save more than 40 trees, nearly 14,000 gallons of water, 40 million BTUs of energy, 7 cubic yards of solid waste, and 2.5 tons of greenhouse gas emissions through the end of 2008 by printing 2008 catalogs and marketing collateral on recycled paper with high post-consumer waste content.
2. Saved over $3,000 a year by installing a water filtration system and removing bottled water service.
3. Reduced paper usage by 30% and saved $10,000 per year in overhead by switching to "green" cleaning supplies and adopting new paper use policies:
• Communicating as much as possible by email and electronic PDF files, printing only when necessary.
• Doing all office printing on recycled paper.
• Setting all printers to print on both sides of the paper, instead of one side only.
• Displaying meeting agendas and notes on a projector instead of printing them for meeting attendees.
The company also took a number of other steps to reduce the environmental impact of operations at its office in Concord, CA:
1. Reduced water use by installing low-flow toilets.
2. Cut electricity use by switching to fluorescent light bulbs.
3. Reduced emissions by updating forklift exhaust converter to comply with clean air standards that won’t be enforced until 2009.
4. Set up a recycling plan that includes e-waste such as batteries and other materials too hazardous to throw in our landfills and encouraged employees to bring their materials from home to the office for recycling.
More Green Initiatives on the Drawing Boards
The changes already made at C&T Publishing are just the beginning. Future initiatives in the planning stages include:
1. Moving to a completely paper-free office.
2. Switching all printing to recycled paper and soy inks.
3. Adopting a tree planting plan to offset paper usage/greenhouse gasses.
4. Joining the Green Press Initiative, which aims to help book and newspaper publishers reduce their environmental impact on the world's forests. (For more information on the initiative, visit http://www.greenpressinitiative.org.)
5. Powering the company's offices and warehouse with solar panels.
6. Adopting green standards in warehouse operations.
